cats ears

Is there an ointment i can put on arthurs ears to help heal them up? He was a fighter in his youth, and his ears are torn to shreds, and now they bleed sometimes when He knocks the scabs off. unfortunately, He's one of these outdoor cats who sits under hedges etc in the pouring rain and scrapes his ears on the trees and things. i thought of putting one of those lampshade things on His head that you see some dogs wearing, but that would make it difficult for him to lay down to sleep. any suggestion?
Percy.

Are his ears white? White eared cats can get skin cancer if they don't use suntan lotion.

Hi,
Yes, He is a white cat, and one of his ears is half missing, and we were told that sunbathing without cream is not good for him, but the good ear was the same , but that healed up for several years until He started fighting with a new cat on the block. He saw a vet a couple of years ago who said it looked more like fight/scratch damage than cancer. Trip to the vet again i suppose would be the obvious.
I hope that it is just war wounds. My two fight constantly - but it is the male that usually comes off much worse - his sister has paws like boxing gloves. She is lying on my arms as I try to type. Pests!!
The lampshade thing wouldn't stop him putting his head down. My cat had to wear one after an operation and after the initial bumping into things she got used to it. However, it wouldn't be a good idea to let him outside wearing one.
Definitely get them checked over, our white cat got skin cancer and it looked like what could have been fight damage at first.

If they look infected and manky I'd be more worried, maybe get the vet to clean them up properly and suggest something to help. Cats are usually pretty good at keeping themselves clean though.
If he's always fighting it begs the question has he been neutered? Because if he hasn't that would be a good start. Also Sudocrem is a good ointment to use on him and not expensive.
