I was going to make a Malaysian curry tonight. Recipe says use turmeric, but I ran out last week and haven't shopped.

Is there an alternative I can use?

Not really. Saffron would be an alternative but it`s really expensive. You might find it`s ok without turmeric though. It doesn`t have much taste and half the time I think it`s used for colouring as much as anything.
I am with 237SJ on this one. Probably white pepper would be much the same.
Tumeric is Tumeric not realy anything else to use, just restock.
"probably white pepper would be much the same"...................I don't think so!
thats like saying use use tea instead of coffee - lol!
We use turmeric a lot but mainly for the colour, I don't think you would notice too much either without it.

Thanks all. I've ordered some more and cooked something else instead last night. I had a good sniff round on the net but it appears that there isn't really an alternative.
