I've just heard on the news about the jacket that is being sold by T K Maxx that comes with a two and a half inch blade (knife) attached in the jacket. I'm really disappointed as a customer of the shop and I will not be shopping with them until I'm convinced that they have officially withdrawn them. Parents, please be aware if your young ones come home with a new coat. Details can be found here --> http://www.itv.com/News/Articles/TK-Maxx-recal ls-penknife-jackets-690232888.html.

They have withdrawn them
Only after thames valley today confronted them

apparently
Erm, are pocket pen knives now banned?

Personally, I don't have an issue with a 2 1/2" blade.

I assume that you won't carry on using TK maxx as they sell chef knives with 10" blades?
OEV - knives of varying sizes are a fairly important inclusion in a chefs knife set. I hardly think stowage space for knives in jackets is that fundamental to the design; especially in todays social climate.
Its the times we live in, in the fifties and sixties, and I daresay before that also, almost everyone carried a penknife, and as a Scout, we used to carry Sheath knives, (mine was bone handled), but hardly anyone used them as weapons.
Yeah! Remember the swiss army knife display turning round. It used to be "I want that one!" etc, and never a thought of sticking it in someone.
Although unintentional it gos to show how easy it is to bring weapons into the country. I assume these jackets were made abroad.
It's not illegal to carry a knife with a blade of less than 3" if the blade folds in to the handle.

This knife is a penknife, so it is perfectly legal in the UK.

It is illegal to sell this knife (or any knife) to under 18s, whether giving away a knife with the purchase of a jacket to an under 18 is a grey area.

I can see the sense of such a knife attached to a jacket in some situations, perhaps fishing or camping, but I'm glad TK Maxx withdrew the jackets.

I hardly think stowage space for knives in jackets is that fundamental to the design; especially in todays social climate.

It didn't have it as part of the design - it had it attached to a chain and as part of a free promotion (just like copmanies often give their Swiss Army Knives away with camping equipment)

Sad that we don't get to the root of the problem- we prefer to look at irrelevancies and wring our hands.

As Ethel states - these are not in any way shape or form illegal and will be less harmful than a nail file.
It's a weird old train of thought but Oneeye is right. The powers that be seem to think that if they ban the offending object then the problem will go away.
Those who use knives will just find something else to replace them. Like baseball bats.
You could take the knife off the chain and replace it with something more practical ...

... like a corkscrew !
I remember sharpened steel combs, 'knuckle duster' rings, heavy chains used as belts, sharpened keys on a key ring..

where there's intent they'll find a way

Regarding the sword sticks, i think even the police would get a little suspicious if there was an increasing number of youths needing the assistance of a walking stick to get around.
