In folklore the name Passion flower refers to the passion of Christ: the 3 stamens represent his wounds, and the 12 petals represent the apostles.
Passion flower (Passiflora) is a genus of about 500 species of flowering plants in the family Passifloracea.
Supposedly, the story was put together by missionaries to the South West of the US to bring the story of Christ to the 'pagan' Native Pueblo Indians.
