I have been drawing for a long time but I am serious now, and want to improve it.

Keep on doing it, that's what it takes.  Look at drawings and check the techniques.  Hints of lines are often (if not usually) better than lines.  Experiment with different pencils, don't  just  use a sharpener, use a knife to carve the lead to achieve different qualities.   Oh....... and enjoy!
