I notice there is a large increase in those ceramic poppies that some people have now chosen to wear rather than the usual simple cloth type.

Does this not divert from the whole idea of picking a simple poppy and then donating cash in to the British Legions cash tins?

Will those who possess these 'everlasting' poppies be inclined to bring them out each year and so choose not to donate?

Interesting point.

I guess in an ideal world, ceramic poppy owners would donate anyway, and leave the poppy to be re-sold which increases the charity revenues.
perhaps if the year was put on it people will buy one every year .
Good idea mallyh. I had wondered that too.
I believe one of the reasons why the 'Red Nose' emblem is re-designed every year is so that no-one can trot out the old one again.
Lots of different poppies you can buy from the Royal British Legion

I have a relatively expensive brooch poppy I bought from the british legion online however I still donate every year to the guy who knocks at the door and those sold at work - I just don't take a poppy.
I discussed this on a thread last night, I have a collection of various Poppies acquired over the years - they are always bringing new ones out.

In hc's link you'll see the wonderful Somme commemorative ones and the story of how they are made is superb.

There may be a few people who pay say £20 for a Poppy brooch and never pay again but for myself, I contribute throughout the year not just a pound in a collection box at Remembrance time.
This was a thread yesterday, which although the topic appears unrelated it does develop somewhat - if anyone is interested to read it.

I'm the same, Prudie. We have also bought their 'everlasting' shopping bags.

I think you should go out with your jangly can and ask them AOG

I think the act of giving and remembering has nothing to do with whether you have a paper cloth or ceramic poppy
I have a small poppy 'stud' which I have had for 3 years because I could never keep the paper one in place but that does NOT stop me from donating every year and the same goes for the rest of my family
you can wear ceramic poppies? Mine s huuuuuge and i would be afraid to wearr it. I havent seen any cloth ones either
I've got a 'posh' poppy but I still put money in collecting boxes as I imagine others do. Everyone knows what the money's for.
Bedknobs - I did mentions the word 'stud'
Bednobs, click on hc's link to the Poppy Shop, a huge range from crochet to glitter, Deco, ceramic, velvet.

Other products besides jewellery too of course.
I always put money in the collecting boxes whether I take a poppy or not.
Can't find any round here.... They are selling out as soon as they come in apparently.
I wonder where the Poppy money goes, after admin charges etc. It sure doesn't go to ex service men living on the streets.
In an ideal world there'd be no need for a poppy day. Even in a less than ideal one the government ought to provide for the needs of citizens such that a charity for exservice personnel was not thought needed.

I suspect whilst some might no longer donate, most will as they will understand that the point is not in the flaunting of the poppy symbol but in the contributions to the cause.
I tend to lose/squash the paper poppies, so for the last few years have bought several other designs from various websites, including the RBL.

They are either proper broaches (to go on coats/jackets), or pins (for jumpers/blouses).

But every year I still put a significant donation in one of the Legion boxes.

I think that's fair.
