1d: 16's response to theatre administration? (16a is Stephen Sondheim): *n*s*h*s*a. I can only think of "anesthesia", which is the US version of "anaesthesia". Is this right? If so, why? If not, what on earth is it??

I think it refers to operating theatre administration - SS is the clue to the American spelling.

Yes, thank you. I suppose it's something which is administered in a theatre, an operating one, that is, but the clue's a bit unconvincing, I think.
The idea is that "Anaesthesia" is the state (of loss of feeling/insensibility), while "Anaesthetic" is what is administered.

So an American's 'response' to an anaesthetic (the 'theatre administration') would be 'ANESTHESIA'.
