There is a terrific thunder storm happening where I am now...and I was just wondering...turning off and unplugging the tele....wise choice or old wives tale?

I think it`s the aerial you`re supposed to unplug in case it gets struck by lightening.

As 237SJ states, the risk to TV sets is via the aerial lead.

However what you're really meant to unplug is your router, as current surges caused by electrical storms have a nasty habit of killing them! (In the days of dial-up modems, I lost three to electrical storms. An assistant in PC World told me that they expected to sell 30 more than usual, in just that one branch, on any day following a thunderstorm).
