Today Youngest Junior O (12) has gone on his 4th multi cultural visit to a mosque and a sikh temple. They have their lunch boxes checked to make sure there is nothing in it (i.e. a ham sarnie) that will cause offence. I have had to pay £10 for the honour. I wonder how many Moslem/Sikh children go on multi cultural visits to churches/synagogues etc? I have decided this is the last one he is going on and will keep him off school when they have to go again next year. On a lighter note, he announced this morning he needed a bandana to wear in the Sikh temple. I couldn't find one so much to his disgust he has been sent with a pink & silver scarf.
Rant over.

Tilly - towards the cost of the bus
See, I'd love to visit these places. When my son was in year 6 I went with the school to the local synagogue, when it come to Rabbi's question time I kept asking the kids to ask him stuff that I wanted to know ;)

One visit I can understand, but they have to go every year. Why?
His 4th?!! Careful, they'll be recruiting him soon! :P

I think it's good for kids to have an understanding and respect for other people's religion, but I think 4 visits is probably a bit much.

I'm with you on this one, I would make it his last.

I shall be watching him carefully when he comes home tonight.
If he calls me an Infidel and refuses to eat his pork chop for tea I will be back on here for advice
Hahaha :D

I don't get why they have to go every year? My son is the same age and hasn't been on one, so it can't be part of the curriculum...?

Perhaps you need to ask the school for the Religious Education schemes of work or curriculum documents. To be doing the same visits, four years in a row, seems strange.

Madmen, the visits started in primary school and continued into his middle school. I agree one visit would be educational but I cannot see the point of annual trips.
He can spout at length about Islam but if I ask him anything about Christianity he has a blank look on his face.

Tilly - good idea
He'll be going to Pakistan on a field trip before you know it! ;)

Tee-Hee ........ Runs away....
ooh, that was bad :P
You can run but you can't hide, nibble.
I didn't mind when my children had similar trips at that age but I was a little miffed when I found they were lacking in basic knowledge of their own history/culture.
I'd rather see that addressed before they broaden their horizons.
Pity you don't live in the East End Mrs O - then he could have called you an Infidel-boy! x
