[ "That this House recognises the economic, social, cultural and sporting importance of football to the United Kingdom; is therefore surprised at the paucity of representatives from the world of football in the Upper House; further notes that Sir Alex Ferguson, as the manager of Aberdeen and Manchester United, is the most successful manager in the history of British football; and calls for him to be recommended for appointment to the House of Lords." ]

Aye.
Twaddle !!
There's a petition doing the rounds asking that Gyan Riggs is given a knighthood. Could this and the proposal for Sir Alex be coupled somehow?

I suspect Giggs will have to wait until things have quietened down a bit before he gets his gong.
I've a better idea. Why not strip honours from everyone who has just been doing their job for years and being well paid for it. Special investigation into the entertainment industry, but the civil service ought not get away scot free either.

Meanwhile make the upper house a democratically elected upper house, party loyalties barred, only a portion of it up for re-election at any one time to add hysteresis and avoid fashionable but dangerous short term swings of opinion. Ensure no automatic admission to government positions simply for receiving a pat on the back.
Hear hear O_G, why should people be honoured just for doing their job?
aren't there enough wallies in the Lords as it is.
<<asking that Gyan Riggs is given a knighthood>>

Yes, but he'd never wear it.
removing honours for people doing their job would certainly get shot of all those lollipop ladies queuing up at the Palace for their gongs. But the honours are generally reserved for those doing their job particularly well or successfully. That's why Paul McCartney is a Sir and members of Oasis are not.
Let's dump the House of Lords and make Answerbank into the second chamber.

There's probably as much common sense and less twaddle on here.

What titles shall we give ourselves?
woohoo, the country run by CBers... when's the next train out?
Sorry, this is a news post, not a chatterbank - mustn't go off at a tangent
I imagine a country run by me at one end of the room and anotheoldgit at the other would grind to a halt fairly quickly while we continued to poke each other with sharp sticks.
