Can a cable modem and a wireless network be switched off at the mains at night to save energy without causing them any damage?

there isn't an absolute answer to this.
the "on/off" debate has been running for years

broadband is described as "always on" and the provider's equipment may not like your end being switched on/off regularly.

dsl modems are notorious for using cheap power units ... they switch off ok .... but on can be a problem.

having said that it's greener to switch off ...

.... as long as you dispose of all your old units responsibly
I've never had a problem with turning them off.
No problem with turning them off.
