Are ads bothersome for people using different browsers or different devices? I use chrome on a laptop and I cant say I find ads a particular nuisance and I dont use anything to block ads. Could your techies help if its browser/device issue
Well, if you didn’t post for four months after the incident it couldn’t have been me who upset you, Prudie. I’m the new kid in the block so that’s me off the hook. Phew! Sigh of relief there. ;o)
The ads don’t bother me, the mods don’t bother me, any member who I don’t want to engage with, I don’t. I’ve never had any sort of spat with anyone, or had a post removed as far as I can remember.
Perhaps it’s because I’m not an avid user of the site, perhaps I’m just boring. I enjoy it for the bits I enjoy which might sound daft but that’s how it is for me, and I can’t be done with any aggro.
And I’d never pay to use the site, same as any of the others I belong to. I’d just stop using it.
When we were asked to donate it was just to support the site out of pure goodness of the heart, there was never any mention of removing ads at the time. You can't compare the two sets of figures now.
I use Chrome on a laptop and they are tolerable but Chrome on my tablet is terrible, ads over the answer box or latest posts, it's verging on ridiculous.
One tech bit I don't understand, why are a lot of my ads from sites I may have looked at on google away from this site. AB hasn't been paid by them surely, it's just cookie related isn't it?
While I've never been ad-free, it's the size and how they affect my enjoyment of AB. Previously they were mostly discreet horizontal banners. Not an intrusion. Now they are 3x the size, verticle, and in the middle of threads...and they bounce. This is every time I move from page to page. My tablet is at the end of its life and misbehaves in other ways. The ads as they are now contribute to my frustration.
i used to get the pop up ads about a week or so ago but i kept on reporting them as ads covered content or something like that and now they have stopped , haven't had any for a while
I'm also on Chrome on an Android tablet.
That's the main problem. You'll be reading a post or a thread and all of a sudden it will disappear because an ad his encroached itself in the middle of the thread pushing all the other posts down. It's incredibly irritating.
The option to allow or reject cookies no longer appears on my screen when I first enter the site. It always did but not any more! Don't know why. Just sayin'.
I don't think ads, no ads or donations will make any difference. AB has become somewhere where people just want to post bad news, or to revel in being incensed about something - hopefully to make others equally incensed which might make the poster feel better about themselves. It's depressing. Shame really.
It is a shame, 237. There was a time when we could banter, ask for advice, post for fun or disagree yet remain civil.....well the majority of us could. That has gone and is what is bringing the site down.

AB seems to have changed during Covid. Wonder if lockdown made some folk grumpy. :-)
Nowt to do with grumpiness, Gness. All to do with a badly manage site which I suspect is on its very last legs. Man the lifeboats. Women and moderators first!
I think Brexit was a huge stimulator of division and intolerance in this country, and covid worsened things by introducing other issues with two opposing gangs - vaxers v anti vaxers, lockdown v anti lockdown, and mask v anti-mask.
When times get hard people start lashing out and quarelling.
No, Zacs. I have noticed calm members getting grumpy.

As an aside. Are you happy with the women first bit as we have fought for equality for so long?
Nah, it’s just the interweb which has let people espouse their opinions in isolation to reality.
You have a very good point there, Atheist.
It was just an historic phrase, Gness.
Obviously Brexit was the worst, because the vote was so close and the consequences so drastic. The referendum rules were ridiculous to allow for such a result. History will judge Cameron far more harshly than May, Johnson or Truss (forgive me if I've forgotten one or two).
^ I don't think Brexit has anything to do with it. Lockdown however...
