Foxes (Again)

Has anyone got experience of foxes living in earth dens in their garden? I have been away and found a lot of earth scattered across the paving slabs where a fox had dug into the area under a fence. Every day I have swept the earth back into the hole. Every night the fox comes back and digs it out again. Yesterday I put some spare circular stepping stone slabs along the fence to stop the digging. Last night the fox managed to dig in between them to get to the hole. I have found a couple of bits of wood this morning and chucked them in and moved the slabs so that they are over the hole. I have tried to shine a torch in there but can`t see far enough back. I`m off to work later and won`t be here for a few days. I`m not worried that the *** thing is in there (being that they are nocturnal animals). Much as they`re a pest, I don`t want to see one suffer. Has anyone else been in this situation and found a fox has been sleeping in the den during the day?

Thanks for all of the interesting replies. Mallyh, that is exactly what I was worried about. Dr F, thanks for the links. The hole in my garden has an entrance and an exit as well and it definitely isn't a tunnel into next door's garden because I have had a look at the other side. I don't think there are cubs involved as the hole has only just appeared and it's too late in the year for that. Foxes have always loved my garden. Sometimes I put the security light on and see one sleeping under a bush or in the middle of the lawn under the crab apple tree. I just wish it wouldn't dig right in front of the garden shed because I can't get the door open due to the pile of soil.
