Is it about 1956? If so how could the the 'girls' report the police finding a book of second class stamps in the deceased's pocket? They were introduced I think in 1968?

Well spotted! Wikipedia states that the programme was set in 1952. Two-tier postage wasn't introduced until September 1968. Possibly of interest: http://www.bletchleyparkresearch.co.uk/2012/09/07/the-bletchley-circle-review-did-the-writers-get-it-right/

Nor would the word "leverage" be used meaning influence, especially with the American pronunciation, leeev'rage.
The programme researchers need to be more careful. There's been several mistakes lately.
