A neighbor.....and her neighbor stand by the front door and smoke many times a day.
With the lovely weather we have been having our sitting room smells awful from their smoke so we keep closing the windowa. They are just feet from my apartment.

My husband has COPD and spends hours coughing night after night. Cigarette smoke can start it of as it has tonight. Its almost 2 am here and only now has my husband settled down to sleep.

He asked one of them if they would mind moving further away but met with "mind your own business" from the nearest neighbor.

She hasn't worked in all of the 6 years she has lived their, ironically because she says she suffers from COPD. [ Obviously claiming Benefits] No way would she puff her way through so many cigs if she does.

Has anyone else had a similar situation they have resolved.....can you tell me how you did it.

My husband is over 80 and not in the best of health. He gets many chest infections when we call on a team of respiratory nurses to help him when he has an attack.

Why the hell some people have to be so inconsiderate to others for the sake of their fix of nicotine.

I agree with naomi here. The issue of benefits, whilst annoying, really is irrelevant to the issue. People not smoking in their own homes is a regular sight these days. I'm not sure why they don't just stop smoking altogether, if they find the stench so bad that they don't want it in their own homes. Stopping smoking is made so much easier these days, unlike when I...

I find breaking wind is a good idea if the object then you can point out their habit is just as offensive or the old trusted bucket of water over them and plead you thought they were on fire

What a nice world it would be if Cupotee could have explained MrC's condition and the neighbours had smiled and just moved down the garden a little.
I know....I live in cloud cuckoo land....but it's nice here....:-)

Exactly Gness.

As for getting on with neighbours, I have been married almost 54 years and until now NEVER had bad neighbours before.

They don't confine it to day time, they are out there till well after midnight. Its such a shame with the wonderful weather recently its not possible to enjoy it.

old-geezer the only back room is our bedroom.

Hey ho, at least at our ages we don't have too much longer on this planet to suffer rude ignorant people.

Aww, Cupotee.....I don't like to think of you feeling like that..you should be enjoying these years as best you can without having to deal with the rudeness of neighbours...I hope it gets better...x
I'd ask once more - very politely & explaining the problem as clearly and quietly as I could.

If there was no satisfactory response then I'd take a view on the precise type of music which the offending smoker would least like - then every time they came out for a fag I'd turn a cassette/cd/whatever player on - playing the same tune every time - as near as possible to where they were standing ... and then turn it off when they finished.

Petty I know - but very effective.
Sunny dave, our local Co-op used this tactic to get rid of the teenage yobs who used to congregate in the doorway every evening , terrorising the elderly customers...........apparently they did not appreciate the classical delights played to them every evening, they soon left. Lol
