The question was :- Douglas Bader was a British fighter pilot in which war.The first person dodges the question and gives it to another. The answers are (a) World War One (b) World War Two (c) Korean War
. The answer given was World War One. Yes we had a lot of fighter planes in WW1.
Where do they get these contestants from. Are they hand picked for their stupidity

TV companies must put adverts in the papers, requesting only thick people to take part in programs. On the Lotto program a few weeks ago, one young chap was asked "Where is the Algarve ?" His three choices were :: Portugal, Spain and Ireland. He got all excited and said that he had been there on holiday recently and gave the answer as Spain ! If I was as thick as these...

Still Mount Everest, presumably.
Mount Everest.
Douglas Bader might be remembered now because of the film of his life starring Kennith More. Even so, you'd need to be a certain age to remember that.
Well done! Wonder what others would answer?
Everybody knows that our greatest WW1 flying ace was James Bigglesworth....
I admit i wouldn't have known which war it was. I am stupid in some ways, i suppose.
The Mount Everest question is similar to; what was the prime minister's name in, for instance, 1990?
david cameron
...David Cameron
I'm pretty sure that I wasn't aware of Douglas Bader until I was in my 20s.
Some things are taught to you at school, some you pick up along the way.
It's always been that way and so shall it ever be. Hopefully.
Of course pugthedog and pixie but some people would be fooled in trying to think who was pm in the given year.
Sir George Everest pronounced his name Eve-rest and not Ever-est (not a lot of people know that, well, up until now anyway:-)
How can the answer be 'Everest' when it wasn't called that?

If I was as thick as these people, I'm fairly sure that I wouldn't want to on national TV and let everybody know. There is a phrase that goes something like " Better keep silent and be thought a fool, rather than open your mouth and remove all doubt "
The Prime Minister's name in 1990 is an example of a badly phrased question, both DC and TB are valid answers.

Another good question on Today's Tipping Point:-
Who is known as the Old Lady of Threadneedle street?
1st contestant pass, 2nd contestant "York Minster"
Yes, difficult to believe that 2 people didn't know that.
zebo, did you mean DC or JM ???
As said, it is very easy to 'forget' in the studio. When I did Pointless, in preparation I preprogrammed myself that if any country based question came up, to chack and see if Comoros, Kazakstan or Kyrgystan fitted the question (as all 3 were normally pointless). Final round we got a country question and ... all three went out of my head...didn't even think of them! So much for preparation!!! Luckily my brother thought of Panama (even though I'd been there 3 months earlier!).
BTW, when Mt Everest was first surveyed, the height came out at exactly 29,000 feet. The surveyors thought "no one is going to believe us" and made the official height 29,002 feet...to sound more accurate! As the mountain grows 1/8" a year (due to tectonic upheaval), at the moment the official height is 29,029 feet (which is really easy to remember for quizzes!).
