I bought a new pond pump today and it didn't have a p[plug on it so I had to take the plug of the useless pump to put on the new one.
I used
A pair if cutting pliers to cut the plug off.
A wide flat screwdriver to undo the plug
A small Philips head screwdriver to undo the wire holder thingy
A tiny flat screwdriver to get the wires out of the holder things in the plug
A pair of pliers to cut the new cable
A wire stripper to expose the wires
Then I used them all again in reverse more or less

What a palaver!

Why don't they put a sort of usb thing on the end of the wire and produce plugs which you can just slot the wire into?

(I know that the length of the wire would be an issue but there must be an easier way to put a plug on a wire.

It appears to be (marginally) legal because they can argue that the pump is designed to be permanently attached to the mains wiring - which is safer than a plug/socket arrangement for outdoor equipment like pumps. My guess is that the 'how to fit a plug' information will have some weasel words saying something along the lines of "if you decide to fit a plug...

Glad it worked for you Conne, I still sit there staring at the plug wondering which side is left and which is right :-(

I think you're right Dave. The pump should probably be fitted to the mains, outside but, again, it would be a palaver when you needed to get a new pump. They don't seem to last that long.

I just wish that fitting a plug was a bit less fiddly.
Eccles - when you open plug keep the one to be wired on left hand "one digit at the top" which is earth can be green/green/lemon colour on your hand then the rest is easy, bRown = right bLue = left
Tilly, I spent the weekend attaching various bits and pieces and hose from my bathroom mixer tap to my empty water butt. 1st floor flat to ground floor garden. Up and down the stairs like a bride's nightie.
Eventually managed to clean and fill empty water butt. Then of course had to dismantle everything.
Sometimes it would be good to have a man to help. Or someone to design something simple.
Could you not get an outside tap fixed up, Daisy ?.
No. There is an outside tap in my garden but plumbed into the water supply of the downstairs flat. They have to come into my garden to use it. Both flats are water metred.
Right, I see Daisy.
Tony, how about a well done for having now cleaned and filled the water butt without male assistance? Done my back in.
Very well done Daisy, Be round to give your back a massage !
Promises, promises.
Well Daisy your not exactly round the corner are you.
Round the bend, more likely. X
No your not Daisy, G'night got to be up early for work tomorrow :-(
Lekker slaap Tony. Love G ♥

Well done to you, daisy. I hope your back's a bit better this morning.
Sorry Conne, couldn't follow your directions at all.

The fact remains that I do not know left from right and no little tricks have ever helped.
