It would heave been my f-i-l's 100th birthday next week and granddad g wanted to put a remembrance in the local paper. We were initially quoted just short of £100 including VAT for a fairly basic insert. We have reduced the words and it now comes to £52.75 (excluding VAT) for 39 words I still feel that this is steep as it works out as £1.35 per word (Ex VAT)

Admittedly it is in a box but that isn't necessary. Can any one tell me what is the going rate per word for local papers?

thank you

Our local rag (the East Anglian Daily Times) charges by the column centimetre, not directly by the number of words. For a 100th birthday announcement, the rates are £33 for 6cm, £38 for 8cm, or £43 for 10cm. Those rates include VAT and (for the larger two sizes, the optional inclusion of a photograph).
