My mother wants to give us a bit of money for Christmas, there are 4 of us in varying degrees of financial circumstances. Some of us have partners/children and some of us haven't, some own our homes and others don't. I'm not talking loads of money here, but last time she did this there were arguments, how do you think she should do this fairly?

If they argued about it they don't deserve any more in my opinion - she should spend it on herself and give each of them a mince pie.

it should be up to your mother....whatever she wants to give, people should be grateful for! honestly......?
my parents sometimes give me and my brother money at christmas - i would never dream of asking how much he got or thinking that it was anything more or less than me - i'm just grateful for the gift. Your siblings sound very undeserving - it's a gift. If they argue about it this year I would tell your mum to buy them all a charity gift next year (like a goat for an African farmer or something) - that should shut them up xx
Whatever the circumstances you should all be grateful and not argue about it. Perhaps you should all get together prior to the event and agree not to act like children when your mum gives you a gift. Perhaps she should give you all different amounts, and if you have all agreed not to discuss figures, there would be no arguments. Just sounds ungrateful to me. You are all lucky she is giving you anything. Perhaps she should just NOT give any of you anything!
