I don't like having to describe myself as an Atheist. The word atheist describes what I am not, but not what I am.

So come on ABers, get your thinking caps on and come up with a new name that doesn't sound too pretentious or superior.

You never know one day the new name may be adopted worldwide!!

MAGIC....that may give the wrong impression of our beliefs.

Ah well, that passed the last half hour of work. I'm off home now.

Thanks all.
Andrew - it is a hard job that you have. I worked harder in the civil service.
The word ‘Atheist’ shouldn’t exist because it assumes belief in a God or Gods to be the default position for human beings – and it isn’t.

‘People’ is good word.
"Freely suspended intellect" - Montesquieu
naomi - 'We are The People. We are not sheep and we don't need a Shepherd'.

I don't think you can really say 'our beliefs', because as someone else said, Atheists do not necessarily hold the same beliefs - except for one. They don't believe in the existence of any god.
why do we have to have a new name, i am an atheist, it does what it says on the tin..
I see no need for a new name, myself. Atheism is a very specific term, applying to a non belief in a deity only. Why on earth would you wish to define yourself by such a narrow filter? For me, Atheism is only a part of who I am, and I am content that, when talking about gods and religion, I am known as an atheist.

Describing yourself should encompass more than just your attitude to gods and religion, and you will not be able to find any single term to cover all of what you believe.

In the spirit of the question though, I would have no objection to being described as a heretic, or infidel - both sound vaguely menacing :)
i've been a freddist for ages...before it was cool...
Irreligionist.
'Irreverent' seems to fit in so many ways.
