The original came out of the rocka a billy 50s scene from Bobby Fuller and his band. Like many from that time they were paving the way for a huge social change. This gave it the 70s energy.

I respect 237SJ's preference for Sinead O'Connor's version of 'Nothing Compares To You' over my Chris Cornell suggestion. 

It should be noted though that Sinead's was also a cover version of Prince.
