My Mum Tells Me To Pack My Job In

Should I? I didn't get a Christmas present, you see, from my boss. My mum says, "If I were you I'd Jack it in. I wouldn't put up with that". Also, the environment I work in has a lot of sexualized conversations which I feel uncomfortable with. My mum says, "You don't realise you need something out of life and not just work. Just pack it in and apply for something else".

I tell her I am applying for jobs (which I am) and that it takes time. She'll then say, "Just leave the job now. You're not short of money. All you have in life is that job of yours. Do voluntary or something".

What do you think? Yes, I'd love more from a job, but I don't want to end up long term unemployed either.

Be very careful, you have said in the past that your Mum wants you to be at home with her and that she is controlling. She may be using your woos to get you right where she wants you.  At least if you have a job you have some independence from her.  Trust me, I've been where you are, my only escape from her was my work.

None of my bosses have ever bought me a present. I never expected it.

You are an adult and your mother needs to treat you like one.  You make your own decisions about your job.

Because you didn't get a present? No.

What do you want to do?

Your Mum should be more worried if your boss did buy you a present.

Not getting a Christmas present from your boss seems a very lame reason to give up your work - jobs aren't too easy to find these days!

not on account of not getting a present (or did everyone else get one?). But an uncomfortable working environment is a reason for leaving - your mum's right, just having a job isn't enough, you need to enjoy it.

But yes, you're right too, it's better to have something else to go to before you leave; so keep searching.

Hi jno. Yes, I was the only one left out of a present at work. Even the secretaries who started after me, got one :(

that might be forgetful, or might be rude. But I'd stay as long as I could tolerate (in fact I did just that) until something better turns up.

You did get an advent calendar from one of the top Managers as did the other seven in the office.  Your boss didn't give you a gift last year so maybe there is a reason?  Seems strange!

My boss doesn't like me, I feel, Hazlinny. I'm quiet and shy and I also don't think he gets my banter, but I've been told my work is excellent by my line manager. I don't think I measure up to his previous secretary who retired two years ago.

You never seem to come across as quiet and shy, Treacle, but I do think, if your boss gave gifts to the others in the office, it was a bit mean to exclude you though not a reason to consider leaving.

Believe me, Hazlinny, I am very shy and blush a lot! Deep down, I'm getting fed up of my job, so it might be the push I need xx

Don't make life harder for yourself though. Leave as soon as you have found another position that you like the sound of. Hope things work out for you.

I was once told it was easier to get a new job if you were already working. What reason would you give a possible new employer for leaving your work? It does sound a bit odd that you didn't get a present and, like you, I would not enjoy the sexualised conversations but neither are good reasons for making yourself unemployed.

you are a temp, no?  perhaps thats why

Are you a friend of Abbey, by any chance?
