I did that, without thinking, in company of some friends.  Would such behaviour be accepted if I were to be invited to dine with the king?

...or just old farts!!

Everyone farts , there will probably be staff in waiting who the king can blame but  don't draw attention to it by apologising.  If you follow through best to avoid sitting down as the upholstery fabric will have cost a fortune.
