Well, as an autistic girl who hates socialising, she is doing pretty well! Am actually somewhat fed up with hearing about her. She was asked what she proposes to do about it. Back to Jim's point about new technologies etc redressing the short-term effects the switch from fossil fuels (like horse power to internal combustion engines).
Whatever the cause man-made or other, it's not going to happen. But that doesn't leave us powerless (clumsy use of language) as in we can't do anything about it, so sit back and resign ourselves to our fate.

Indeed it has. A wonder it hasn't been suggested we cut down a little. Oh! I know. We could suggest a reduction in human population (the growth of which is the single biggest factor when examining the cause of these problems - more people need more "stuff" and they need to move about, etc.etc.). No mention of such a proposal (not as prominent as changing light bulb types, as far as I can see). I wonder why?

I disagree, OG. The girl is mentally ill and has been abused by parents on the make (IMO).
What would make the world a better place is if we had fewer grown men in politics who either believe this nonsense, or lack the courage to point out that it is[i nonsense.
Can you remember the Vince Cable interview after the sick girl emoted before a deferential group of MPs? At the time of the financial melt-down in 2008 I had quite a lot of time for Cable. But now he's appears just as mentally sick as young Greta. With the important distinction that she didn't wish Asperger's on herself, and had no choice over who her parents were. No doubt necessity is the mother of invention, but on the other hand why wait until it's necessary to make changes, by which time it will be too late at least to save, among other places, the Maldives, most of the Netherlands, large parts of East Anglia, Lisbon, New Orleans, etc (all of which are under threat by, say, 2150 or so).
Meanwhile, yes, human population control is going to be part of the picture. But the only way to sensibly achieve that is to fund birth control and women's sexual health generally, and even then it wouldn't be enough to merely slow down the population growth rate. Better to invest in already existing greener technologies, rather than rant about how it's all China's fault. How odd that going on about China is an excuse to ignore the problem rather than a motivation to tackle it as best we can.

I honestly believe that we will wipe ourselves out long before climate change does. We are gradually wiping out the species that help us to survive by our advanced farming, technology and industrial methods and inventions. We are keeping humans alive far past their sell by date and the world is overpopulated. Personally, I think we have already damaged this world as it is beyond repair. And we are likely to be wiped out by diseases that are resistant to drugs. Nature always bounces back, even if in different forms.

Nonsense enters into the equation, Jim, because the measures the UK and Europe are taking (at enormous financial cost and at the risk of jeopardising vital services) will make just about zero difference to the situation. Imagine you are trying to bail out a bathtub to prevent it overflowing and all you have is a teaspoon. Meanwhile, at the other end, people over whom you have no control and who refuse to desist are tipping buckets of water into it. Add to that the fact that many of the measures being imposed on consumers are peeing in the wind when you consider some of the habits that are allowed to continue. For example, consumers are compelled to use low wattage light bulbs, they are implored to wear a jumper and turn their heating down, they are urged to eat less meat. Meanwhile, one shop, just one shop, consumes 20Kw of electricity every hour for about four months of the year when it insists on heating the street with its curtain heaters because it will not close its doors. You can perhaps understand why people get the hump being told how to behave by a sixteen year old when governments could introduce a simple law preventing that waste but refuse to do so. And don't even start me off on the "advantages" of burning wood which is felled on an industrial scale, denuding vast swathes of forest, to see it processed into pellets and shipped halfway round the world to be burned in Yorkshire (the result of another government policy). That is why I lack the motivation to tackle the problem as best I can because whatever I do at whatever cost and inconvenience, I'm still using my teaspoon whilst the buckets are still pouring in.
