Car: 2005 CR-V Petrol.

Problem: Can't erase the engine management light. New sensor recently fitted.

Using a hand held ( fairly cheap) engine code reader/scanner I am trying to erase a fault code (knock sensor). The thing scans and identifies the fault but when I select the 'erase'option it signals' 'erase failed.' I am sure the sensor is fine. Could it be a faulty scanner ?

Any suggestions ?

Cheers.

Just found this on a Honda CR-V forum. May not have to disconnect the battery, just remove and then replace No6 fuse. Hi Everyone, I have a Honda CRV 2004. I pulled the #6 fuse and the engine light reset. I looked in the owner's manual under fuses and the manual identified the #6 fuse as the ECU. I removed the #6 fuse while the engine was running. Possibly, derekpara. Might need a more sophisticated scanner to turn it off.
Might be worth disconnecting the car battery for around an hour ( make sure that if your car radio has a code that you know it ). Disconnecting the battery usually sends the ECU back to factory settings ie should turn the light off if there is no fault.

That's a great idea, Tony. I've ordered a more sophisticated scanner but will try your battery disconnect first. It makes sense.

Thanks again.

Hi Everyone,

I have a Honda CRV 2004. I pulled the #6 fuse and the engine light reset. I looked in the owner's manual under fuses and the manual identified the #6 fuse as the ECU. I removed the #6 fuse while the engine was running. The engine immediately shut down. I turned off the ignition replaced the fuse and waited 30 seconds and restarted the engine and the engine light stayed off. Hooray. I'm happy, my babe is happy and we can get a smog check and renew our registration.

Looks even better.

Thanks for going to all that trouble Tony ; I guess we've both learned something !
Hope it sorts it out, derekpara.

Instead of spending money on things that might work why not just pop it in the garage and get the fault properly diagnosed.
Question Author
Hi CaC. Because I have an enquiring mind and like to work through things myself if possible.

Local garages charge between £45 - £60
for a fault diagnosis.
So how does the cost of 2 scanners compare with a diagnostic and peace of mind.
Crap, because he said he likes to do it himself, and learn, plus he will have the scanner for any future problems, so in the long run they will pay for themselves.

Thanks, Teacake. Spot on.

Tonyav. Job done with another scanner ( cost £11.99 total). I am attempting to return the first scanner, which is clearly faulty as I've just tried it on another vehicle without success, but I may be outside the return date.

Anyway, £11.99 well spent; it did the job, I've learned a lot, I can share the scanner with my mates or neighbours, and I've saved quite a bit of money ! All in all a good result.

Thanks again.

Cheers. D.
Good job done then, derekpara.
BA for Tonyav then, Derek?
Question Author
Thanks for the nudge, Tilly. Well deserved in both cases.

And the other thing that's worth remembering is, whatever high tec
equipment a garage might have, it is only as good as the chap operating it. I've lost count of the people that have said to me, they've paid out up to £70 to find a fault to no avail. There are of course some who know their job well, but to find them is another matter.

Dead right, Teacake.

Cheers.
