You probably won't find DIY stores referring to 'spirit based' wood preservatives. They normally divide them ino 'solvent based' and 'water based'. Water based preservatives typically only have about 10% white spirit in them, whereas solvent based ones have around 75% white spirit. So clearly it's a 'solvent based' product which you've been advised to...

Water based preservatives typically only have about 10% white spirit in them, whereas solvent based ones have around 75% white spirit. So clearly it's a 'solvent based' product which you've been advised to use. Creocote is, indeed, such a product.

Yes, jayemcee. The composition of creocote does vary, but it's usually a mixture of diesel and asphalt. Some manufacturers make it out of petrol and bitumen with some solvent naptha thrown in for good measure. The petrol is sometimes called petroleum condensates.

Spirit-based is commonly used to refer to something that's dissolved in a volatile liquid in the sense you're seeking. Diesel and petrol are both volatile, so yes, creocote meets your requirements. Mind you, you could also say that creocote is solvent-based.
Sorry Chris, your admirable answer wasn't there when I started typing. I only went off to the kitchen for a bottle of Port and got into a lengthy discussion on proteases with MrsProf!

Thank you both for your responses. I shall use creaocote, however I think I only paid about £10 for my gallon
where the blurb I just read suggested that the realistic cost is around £30. Will check further but am grateful for the articles. Thank you
