My Son has just been remanded and I'm so shocked by this I feel like I've been bereaved, He was a hard worker, intelligent, but has done something so stupid I don't know what possessed him, I'm not sure what to do never having been in the situation before, he has a birthday coming up and I want to send a card how far in advance should I send it, what can I write it's hardly going to be a 'Happy Birthday' I'm just so confused, any information would be appreciated.

fruitsalad, glad to be of help, hope things work out for the best.
If your son has any problems tell him to talk to the Chaplin, they DO NOT just help with religious matters , they are the best at sorting out problems of all kinds. They have a very special place in a jail as they are neither 'screws' or inmates so they see both sides of a problem , they want to help anyone and never expect or ask any commitment to the 'church' or religion in return.
The Chaplin at the jail I worked in had a saying '' If you want it done quicker just ask the Vicar'' and it was true !
// I know a bit about it as I have worked as a tutor inside a jail ! //

well done ed - you must have the patience of saint

FS I dont think a birthday card is your main concern TBH
organising a defence ( = money ) probably is ....
