That I understand but I have spent hours on beaches, smoke from others does not ever reach me. It's just pandering because it's THE topic to have a go at.

Pure silliness. And I suppose that somebody has actually been paid to dream this one up!
Can't come too soon. Smoking should only be allowed in private never in public.
I remember the exact same argument being put up when the smoking ban in pubs was being proposed. That was sorted.

It will be 'enforced' by public consent. Smoking in public will become socially unacceptable. Who 10 years ago would have thought that smoking in pubs would be not only illegal but socially unacceptable ?
As a smoker this makes me quite angry, you may not like it but smoking is perfectly legal and still done by abut 20% of the UK population yet it's a regular target. I'd like to ban fat people and kids under 10 from planes, that must be a similar proportion but that view would be regarded as unforgivable.
The same way the enforce it in California (whatever that way is). Cigarette butts are harmful to marine life and there is nothing worse than having a nice pitch on the beach and then having to breathe fag smoke for 6 hours.
Bournemouth has had a smoking ban on the beaches around its pier since 1995, with beach wardens reminding smokers of its existence and asking them to refrain from smoking there.
Ditto to 237SJ. I can't imagine venturing on that beach as shown anyway, but if I did I would find the cigarette smoke of others only added to the misfortune of being there.
Bonkers
Try Sussex Constabulary. No seaside for you to play on in the Metropolis.:-)
Purdie that leaves 80% who do not smoke and do not want to breathe secondhand smoke.

Sitting, up-wind of smokers would work.
I always seem to be downwind of a smoker on a beach. Probably not such an issue on a large beach like Saunton as there is plenty of space to spread out but I have been on beaches abroad where I have my precious piece of shade under a palm tree and a smoker pitches up next to me. The alternative to breathing cigarette smoke is giving up my coveted shade and laying out in the scortching sun which is not an option.
I dont see a problem, providing smoking beaches are allocated.

Smokers dont care who they upset when they spark up. Most of this backlash they have bought upon themselves.
Prudie, as you are a smoker (as I once was) you would hardly be aware of it, but if you were to stop (recommended) the smell is very pernicious. I can sometimes smell cigarette smoke coming from an overtaking car on the motorway even when both our vehicles have the windows closed.
Khandro, you have a great imagination!!

Correct. Am also a reformed smoker. Can smell it across a wide street and hate it.I do have sympathy with smokers who try to give up.
my OH smoked for 30 years and he's gone onto vaping about 18 months ago - he now feels nauseous when he smells smoke and now I can smell smoke on someone quite a way off. They will Police it like they do in parts of the USA and how they Police no alcohol in public places in some areas of Canada - patrols on the beach -it will give some work to all these British people who can't find jobs.
Plenty of east Europeans round here to Police it. We already have smoking bans as pointed out previously and also drinking bans.
