Amazon Kindle file transfers

I am thinking of buying one and have only read reviews so far.
I am a bit puzzled about putting your own .pdf files on it.
Do you need to email them to yourself (seems odd) or can you just copy them across from a PC with a USB lead

Copy from PC using USB lead. (though you can email them to it too if you haven't got the USB lead on you)
