I have obviously hit a button somewhere/how on my iPad, and now the status bar displays in negative form, white on black, and every time I try to enter either Google or AB I am asked to sign in, although the 'stay signed in' box has been ticked.

Any help would be appreciated. TIA.

Don't be embarrassed, I didn't know where it was myself til you posted this question so we all gain a bit of knowledge from everyone else.

You've clicked on private browsing by accident, open a new tab, close the keyboard and in the bottom left hand corner click on private.
Actally you don't have to close the keyboard, it sits on the top left hand side of it.

Thank you RR, off to try.

Must be stupid, can't find 'private' RR, but thanks anyway.
Are you using Safari or a different browser?
Question Author
Oh dear, you must think me really dim, just using the browser that came with the iPad 2.

I'm beginning to feel embarrassed about my lack of technical knowledge!
Tap the browser bar as if you're typing a website. The keyboard will pop up, just above the Q (on the keyboard) is the word private, tap that.

Sorry, yes it's Safari that you are using :)
Bt, click the link to see a screen shot of what you should be seeing when you tap the browser bar, you'll see where the word private is. Ignore the coloured squares, they're just my book marks.

I've just had a thought, did you do the software update to ios 7?
