I can only think because you haven't named it yet.

I can only think because you haven't named it yet.
It sounds like you have already given it a name and saved it already
in your documents. You may then have gone back and made an alteration or addition, and it is now asking you if you want to save this as an "amended" version, and give it a different name.

The document already has a name. when i click on 'save' it does not save the updated version with the same name (as it should do). Instead it pops up the 'save as' window and I can only save by renaming.
possibly the document is set as read-only (just done an experiment and it does happen in that circumstance)
Don't you get the 'save' option as well?
Agree with bibblebub. Save it under a different name, get out of MS Word and use explorer to rename/sort out.

Sorry folk, I thought I might get a more technical answer! I have been saving it under a different name which is a pain if you update a document every day, sometimes more. However, I have found a solution but I am baffled why it now works correctly. When I open up in the morning I access word by clicking on the windows icon on the bottom left of the screen. This displays a list of three programs, Email, Internet and Microsoft Word (in that order). I recently switched internet and word by mistake. I have switched it round again and it now saves correctly.
Sounds like a coincidence to me, johnny- but if it's now working that's the main thing
