remote control problems

I have a jvc digital theatre system TH-5C.The jvc remote control RM-STHC8J is suddenly malfunctioning.Certain buttons are working and some not eg I can on/off,vol. Up/down but cannot flip between DVD/FM/VCR.
What could be the reason?

yes,changed them.But must admit one ofthe old batteries was leaking a little.
