What is indexing/

What is this magnifying glass at the bottom of the screen that says either 'indexing' or 'indexing complete' and when indexing slows everything down?

Its your computer making a note of where all your files etc are stored so when you do a search it can find them easier.

I always turn indexing off

me too, its pain in the arris...not sure why windows needs it, Mac Lion doesn't and the search seems to be fast enough.
Indexing is the Microsoft way of tracking fragmented files & folders, which speeds up the loading of programs & applications.

Yes it does.
It doesn't slow everything else down while it does it.
