On the assumption that the new machine runs Windows 7, uninstall Avast and install Microsoft Security Essentials. Forget about Zone Alarm and Scotty - they are of no use to you...
Don't install Zone Alarm, it will drive you nuts. Stick with the Windows Firewall.

Thanks for the replies - I needed the advice . The new pc does run on Windows 7. Does it mean that I should also forget about malwarebytes ?
Install the free version of Malwarebytes and run it once a week, or whenever you think there might be a problem for it to fix.

I have Microsoft Security Essentials, which is programmed, TuneUp - Click Maintenance to clean registry, defragment registry, remove broken shortcuts, gain disk space, optimize system startup and shutdown and defrag hard disks, Advanced System Care for quick malware removal, registry fix, shorcut fix, privacy sweep and junk files clean, CCleaner, and Malwarebytes anti malware. Some may say that I do not need so much but not one picks up everything. None are used at the same time and they all cost me nothing.

hmph, I have uninstalled MSE as it left my computer unable to recognise my external hard drive, which I use as a backup. Now using Avast instead.

Anvi Smart Defender--anti-malware, spyware program, to protect your PC against malware and spyware.
It works perfectly with Avast. |

Anvi anti malware.... Pros Attractive user interface. Includes optimization and privacy clean-up tools. Cons Worst test results for malware removal. Worst test results for protecting a clean system against malware attack. Quarantined a number of verifiably valid Windows component files, luckily nothing critical. Bottom Line Where some antivirus products excel at malware removal and others at preventing new attacks, Anvi Smart Defender is consistently terrible at both. Worse, in testing it quarantined a number of verifiably clean Windows files. Avoid it at all costs. |
