CD to ipod

How do I transfer the music from CD to ipod? Can I download onto laptop then transfer later?

Ok I have managed to get my cd,s onto computer and transferred to my Ipod but on play back it only plays the start of a song then skips to the next one and so on all the way through the cd. Any ideas...
