Nationwide's systems have been down since 10pm last night and are not expected to be up again until tomorrow morning.I have funds in the account but have had no access all day. It has ruined my day completely. My wife was a 100 miles away with no petrol! The only alternative is a credit card.

It's a pain but decide not to let it spoil your day. What's the worst it could have achieved ? Credit card isn't a disaster, in fact it delays payment for up to a month.

I've used my Nationwide debit card today
As have I!
From the nationwide website:
You can continue to use the following services as normal:
Card Payments & ATMs: you can continue to use your card to pay for goods and withdraw cash from ATMs
Their website says it's undergoing planned maintenance but you can use your credit and debit cards as normal.

The problem was that I was expecting money to go into the account at midnight and because of the systems being down it didn't.
Nationwide process their payments between 2 and 3 am, not midnight.

I'm sure the payment would have gone through properly - it's just the website that is down. Some payments are only processed Monday to Friday.
You had plenty of warning that this was going to happen - N'wide must have told me a dozen times in the last week.

A credit at midnight on a Saturday must have been a special (rather than a routine) payment & you could/should have made alternative arrangements.
