I recently installed the free version of Avast anti virus and the results show there are issues with "optimisation", To deal with this I have to download the pay-for variety of Avast, my question is.... is it worth paying for or can I do (something?) myself to cure whatever is wrong please?

Select windows classic theme and turn off all the effects. Turn off disk indexing as well. Don't bother with report from Avast just search on net for more ways to speed up xp. By the way, xp is no longer security supported by Microsoft. You can get a legal copy of Windows 7 from ebay for £20-30.

I do not know having not tried it but my suspicion is that any improvement would be slight. Optimisation improvements usually are.
