I have a DVD which I wish to send to a friend,is it possible to upload it onto my laptop,so that I have a copy ? thank you

Why don't you copy the DVD onto a blank DVD and send that to your friend?

If it won't copy because it's protected, Google DVD decrypter and use that to decrypt it and make a copy.

ps ...if you don't already have it installed, VLC player is very good - it plays pretty much everything (mp3, MOV, MP4, AVI, OGG, FLAC, etc etc) it was recommended to me by an IT professional.
