Jumpers can and have done well in top long distance racing but couldn't match, say Danny's Frankel, for speed over shorter distances.

Who's put the I at the end? I didn't
Frankel

What about 'Arkle'
It was a good chaser. Probably not the best chaser though.
I don't think one can have a best horse ever anyway. All the different factors make it subjective, imo.

Could a horse going over fences also be good on the flat?

Told you I know nothing about horses
Jumpers can and have done well in top long distance racing but couldn't match, say Danny's Frankel, for speed over shorter distances.
Arkle was rated quite a bit higher than Kauto Star.
In a poll to find the best horse of the 20th Century, seven experts rated Man o' War as the best horse. Secretariat was second.
I saw film of Secretariat winning the US Triple Crown in 1973 and he was sensational.
His times in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes, still stand over forty years later.
In my humble opinion, Secretariat was the best ever.
He has not died -he was killed.

no 'killed' . You can use 'put down' if you wish but it means the same thing. He was never much good in his new career as a dressage horse and far too valuable in Insurance terms to be put out to pasture (no breeding value as he is a gelding). I'm guessing it was a decision based on economics rather than putting him out of his misery and his injuries grossly exaggerated by his Connections. The racing world is a very very corrupt one.
Kauto sustained a fractured pelvis and neck injuries in a fall whilst in the paddock. The injuries were such that there was no choice but to put him down.
Red Rum I always used to wonder if it was coincidence it spelt murder backwards.
ken -so they say.....
Lots of failed racehorses sustain fatal injuries while 'in the paddock' and have to be shot. I know this for a fact.
Failed? mmm.
Retrochic; Granted, Kauto Star would have been very well insured in his racing career but there is not that much to be made from dressage. I doubt whether the premium on his death will amount to much. Certainly not enough to influence the very wealthy Clive Smith's decision. I prefer to believe that the decision was taken entirely on humanitarian grounds.
I think alarm bells would be ringing if you tried to take a big insurance policy out on a 15 year old gelding.( or Mondeo)
Svek -please don't show your ignorance. Some of the gold medal dressage horses at the last Olympics were 18 years old and worth hundreds of thousands of pounds.

True, Svejk. Kauto could only have been insured as to his future earnings, which as i said, are not huge amounts in the world of dressage.
