I've just watched a programme which featured some veterans and some of them had the letters AE after their names. Please can someone tell me what this means? I expect it's obvious - to everyone else. Thank you

Dunno, but it might be an abbreviation for Latin "aetatis" meaning "at the age of"
Might be Aeronautical Engineer

I thought it might be a commendation / decoration because one or two had DFC after their names, and I know what this means.

AE stands for Air Engineer and means that at some point these gentlemen were aircrew in the RAF quite possibly on WW2 bombers such as the Lancaster. The AE sometimes acted as co pilot as well in an emergency
