Not my idea of fun.
It gives me that knotted fealing from schooldays.
U is 5 v is 8
Question Author
bobbin, how on earth did you arrive at those answers??
with U=5 and V=8, I get the RHS to be 33.6
You have one equation in two unknowns, so you will only be able to express U and V as a ratio.
It works for any values of U and v, so long as V = 6xU
Bobbin is correct
14 2/u with u = 5 = 72/5
V 3/4 with V = 8 = 35/4

Therefore 72/5 x 35/4 = 18 x 7 = 126
I was reading it as a product. I see now it is using mixed fractions, so U=5 and V=8 is the solution.
There are other methods, but one such solution to this problem can be provided by the application of inequalities.

Due to AB's syntax limitations, see link below;

Ooops... Inequality sign is the wrong way round in relation to 8.4

It should read;

8.4 <

Sorry just returned. Well it seemed obvious to me that v has got to be 8 .....as 14 x9 =126 so 14.01 x 9 was to big and 14.99 x 7.99 = under 120 so 7 is to small
Then as v= 8 the rest is easy to work out

Until now I always thought inequalities were a waste of time other than stating the obvious eg. -5 > -7 (showing off now LOL). It has to be said Zebu, your answer has changed my mind. Thank you for your worthy contribution!!

Having said all that, even though it eluded me, bobbin's approach is so simplistic. Therefore BA to bobbin!!I

Easy when you know how LOL!!
