Skin has melanin pigment, which darkens when expose to sunrays, hair is a waste product of your body, and has no melanin.. Hence no darkening of hair, but skin darkens.

"Why does the sun make your skin darker, but your hair lighter?"

Because the Sun is our friend, and it gives us the colours that we wish we could have all year round.

It doesn`t lighten my hair. It`s too dark. I remember putting lemon juice on it as a teenager to try to get some trendy beach bum streaks but to no avail.
liverpudlian women tend to go orange. ;-)
Your skin produces more melanin when exposed to sunlight, the melanin doesn't darken, it is already dark. Hair lightens because the melanin in the hair is bleached by the sunlight and cannot be replaced because the hair is dead keratin.
