Can someone please help me get started as I have not come across an alphabetical crosswordd before. How do i know what goes where?

Hi. Check the grid for across and down clues which share the same opening cell.
From the clues identify those with double definitions i.e in this puzzle C is at 8a & 8d, and W is at 5a & 5d.

I should have added that once you have entered these into the grid then the starting letters forsome of the rest of the alphabet will become clearer. The number of letters in the clue guides you to the correct entry in the grid.

and there are only a couple of each 4/7/8/9 lettered answers in today's crossword. So once you find one, you can put in the first letter of the other to help.

Well I have met this sort of crossword before, but that is the clearest advice possible for how I might have solved them more quickly. Brilliant.
