The clue is unsound. Vale is Latin for farewell which is fine, but T is not a recognised abbreviation for town (i.e. not listed in Chambers).

Don't care what it says on the internet - Chambers is the standard reference! To be fair you could find that almost anything is true online. Elliemay: 'Servant's farewell to town's first' would be evern better (the apostrophe-s on Servant's indicating 'is').
The word pedantic springs to mind.
Not at all - ask any other professional compiler whether 'town' is a sound indicator for the letter T. And as for pedantry, you can call it that if you like but accuracy and consistency would be better - cruciverbalism is all ABOUT the minutiae of language.
^ Servant is farewell... doesn't make sense to me.
