MAIDEN CASTLE
Maiden Castle?
BAILEY CASTLE _ 11d is COMB not LOOM
Humble & sincere apologies - I was wrong - it is Maiden Castle
All my dictionaries state Jacquaed Loom there is no entry showing Jacquard Comb.
The apparatus is a loom but it contains a card comb.A Maiden castle is an Iron Age earhwork hill fort
As far as I can see, Maiden Castle is a specific place in Dorset. I can find no reference to it having become a "common, if unexplained" name. I think Maiden Castle must be the answer but the clue is rubbish. .
further research on google leads me to think slogger was right first time. it IS bailey castle. and jacquard comb is there, too.
