Is paid sick leave a right of employment? I have a friend that works for a Scottish firm but works in Engand and despite having worked for them for almost 20 years is not entitled to paid sick leave. He is due to go in for a major operation and is worried about how he and his partner will cope

He's entitled to Statutory Sick Pay https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/scotland/work/rights-at-work/sick-pay/check-if-youre-entitled-to-sick-pay but no employees, anywhere in the country, are entitled to paid sick leave (i.e. on their normal pay) unless their contract specifically provides for it.

Thank you both for your help
Not sure what the law is in Scotland but in the UK unless its written into your conditions of employment then you are only entitled to SSP
it is very common for employers to sy they dont do sick pay ( meaning extra moolah over and above)
when the law says they have to pay SSP

for some people one doesnt equal the other ( when it may do)
