Plymouth is investing in this wonderful statue in front of its Theatre Royal, titled 'Messenger' and based off some female actor. 22 ft high, ten tonnes of bronze and some half a million spent on it.

Value for money?
Artistic merit?
Looks like a female gorilla IMO

Interested to hear Pasta's views on how Plymouth see it - but it's better than Barnstaple's Hirst https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2012/10/17/article-2218664-158AFD55000005DC-392_306x510.jpg

Ilfracombe's Hirst DT
Question Author
Correct, Sj - just testing to see who is awake.... blatant lie
I went to Ilfracombe to see Verity, I thought it was amazing!!
Eeek!...I only just saw it today, from the window of a bus. My reaction was w.t.f.,...or close to it. It's huge, ugly, and very threatening looking. Who had that brainstorm?
And...it's permanent!

It is large and somewhat intimidating , the pose makes more sense when you read where the idea came from and watch the trailer for the production Of Othello that inspired it.

half a mill of bronze, whose core elements of copper and tin could have stayed in the ground? Bet it's not even Devonian or Cornish metal used.....
Wow, Messenger is quite stunning!!
Something about it reminds me of slavery but I can't put my finger on why.
If they wanted a cheaper sculpture, they could have bout one of my concrete balls for much less!!
bought**
Modern day statues do seem dodgy. Artists trying to be artistic.
That first picture, what's that hanging down in an intimate area ?

I'm sure the gals would love to stroke them before going into the Theatre Royal, ratter.

'the message' perhaps?
Exactly DTC!! for just a few hundred ££
Was about to ask the same but OG beat me to it.
Looks like a hermaphrodite!
The protuberance is part of the support connected to it for transportation.
Looks like it's disconnected itself.

Ugly thing. When I saw it on Spotlight thought it was a thug in a hoodie.
Very threatening.
