My Mum was very superstitious.She used to say....
If you wash on new years day
You wash the ones you love away.
It's an old wives tale .

My mother-in-law did some washing on a New Year's Day and blamed that for her husband's death that year.....
MrG never allowed washing to be done on Jan 1st (I say allowed because he was unfamiliar with a washing machine and his using it would have indeed brought down disaster)

and despite not being in the least bit superstitious.....I would never use the washing machine or hand wash on New Year's Day..... :-)

I was always told it was NY'sD as if you did housework on NYD then you would do it for the rest of the year!

It appears you can wash on New Year's eve but not New Year's Day.

I've not heard that one either but do know my nan was severely scolded by her mother for once washing something on a Sunday.

Oh Lord....now I've discovered that if I break anything on NYD it means a year of destruction ahead.....

Right - apparently (according to a local Northants Superstition) it is unlucky for men to use a Dyson or Miele before the Spring Equinox - local women apparently visit lonely bachelors regularly to perform these tasks ...

The whole house must be cleaned, bed linen changes, fire grates cleaned out, rubbish put outside, the weans bathed mum and dad ready and waiting for the bells at midnight. On the newly washed table cloth will be Dundee cake, sultana cake, and Madeira cake ( cherry bun) for the posh, a bottle of alcohol , all in preparation for yie first fit .
