at one
O(ver) with CH(ild) inside rid (free)
Question Author
Thanks very much .... can see how "Orchid" works but still have problems with 24dwn as the "i" ("in one" )comes from 23across "Swing he composed, with bit of ragtime thrown in ?" (8) and our answer is "Gershwin"
Is it not AS one?
in all - if you are sure of the 'I'
In (at home) all (everyone)?
With apologies to sibton -

In one (united) - 'in' (at home) + 'on' (supported by) +e(veryone) (initially)
in all is better
at home = IN
supported by = ON
everyone initially = E
Sorry- in one (I assume the intially means first letter of everyone)
Question Author
No sorry ... just can't seem to fit it in ...I'll just have to wait and check the answers tomorrow and see where I've gone wrong ....but thanks a lot to you all for your help!!
Yes, please ignore at one, I meant as one and please award one of the other
So sorry to lead you astray, better answers above
What letters have you already got placed Cross?
Question Author
