Wondered if, should you buy a really expensive casket, brass handles and all that, they are really incinerated in cremations. Seems an awful waste...

The undertaker won't sell brass handles for a cremation.

You could say the same about wedding dresses costing thousands.

I personally would like to go in a cardboard box, rather any money I leave behind goes to Mr P and the kids than on a fancy wooden box.
I think when the final curtain comes down they tip you out onto a handcart and the expensive box is taken for recycling.
(Not that brides tend to be cremated on their wedding day...)
I won't. Waste of money, and they have to unscrew the handles as they won't incinerate. Those wickery things aren't cheap, either.
Agee...go for eco casket..made of cardboard !! Resident won't mind !!
Crematoria will not allow any incombustible items, they have quite strict requirements.

But you keep the wedding dress. Serious question - are these expensive items really incinerated?

So, SlackAlice, they take the handles off do they? The ones you've paid for.
Yes, you can keep your wedding dress, but what use is it really after the big day?

Mine is rolled up inside a suitcase in the loft.
If they are bought for the cremation, then yes, everything is incarcerated.
(No tipping out allowed!)

There are very strict rules about what can materials can be used in a crematorium and no funeral director will sell items meant for burial only for a cremation.
I agree with 2sp- give the money to my family instead. I just whizzed through bernie's related thread below and was shocked to see you can be buried in your garden! I thought there were laws on where people could be buried. Bonfire anyone?
Minty! Woohoo! Xx
yes they are, having been to a number of cremations, including the o/h.
horrible experience
In Cumbria there is a communal casket that can be rented...then you're put in cardboard for cremation...honest it's true..

hc4361: They're not meant for burial but for cremation. And they're certainly not meant for incarceration....
Hi pix xx

Ah! The Cumbrian Casket"
One size fits all

//incarceration.... //

Why you locking them up' they are deceased?
-- answer removed --
They are not allowed to open the coffin once it is there. But some of the things that can't be cremated-

//In line with the Environmental Protection Act there are strict regulations surrounding what is allowed in the coffin for a cremation; therefore any miscellaneous items must be removed. This includes items made from certain materials, for example metal (including jewellery), glass and some PVC and rubber (including shoes) which must not be cremated. If you would like personal items to stay with your loved one for the cremation, your Funeral Director will be able to advise you of the guidelines. Unfortunately, once the coffin has arrived at Emstrey we cannot open it to recover any items.

Q: How does the deceased need to be dressed?

You can choose to dress your loved one in a gown or in their own clothing for their funeral. If you wish for them to wear their own clothing then clothes made from natural fibre such as cotton or wool should be chosen. We also ask that any footwear or miscellaneous items are removed from the coffin prior to the funeral due to cremation regulations.
